Nancy Pelosi hospitalized after injury during Luxembourg visit

Dec. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized in Luxembourg on Friday after suffering an injury while traveling with a U.S. delegation, her office said.

Pelosi, D-Calif., joined other officials in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during World War II when the injury occurred.

The statement from her office did not describe the injury or how it happened, other than noting Pelosi, 84, was hospitalized for evaluation.

"Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals," said Pelosi spokesperson Ian Krager in a statement. "She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation's history."

The Republican chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Michael McCaul joined Pelosi on the trip with 16 other lawmakers.

Some 19,000 U.S. servicemembers died in the Battle of the Bulge, where the Allies fought off Germany's last major offensive on the Western front under the direction of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who would later become president. The battle ran from Dec. 16, 1944, to Jan. 25, 1945.
