Small plane crashes into cars in Texas intersection, injuring 4

Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Four people were injured after a small plane crashed into cars in a south Texas intersection on Wednesday, authorities said.

Circumstances surrounding the crash in Victoria, Texas, were unclear, but authorities said three of the four people injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the fourth victim was flown to an out-of-town hospital for "higher-level treatment."

"We are glad it wasn't worse than what it is," Deputy Chief Eline Moya of the Victoria Police Department told reporters during a press conference. "This is not something we see every day but we are glad that people seem to be okay and that they're getting checked out."

Police received a call at about 3 p.m. Wednesday reporting what Moya said was an "aircraft emergency" at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Zac Lentz Parkway feeder road in Victoria, located about 115 miles southeast of San Antonio.

Officers arrived at the intersection to discover an aircraft and three cars damaged, she said.

Five people were involved in the incident, she said, though it was unclear who, if anyone, were passengers of the plane. The pilot, she said, was not among those hospitalized but was being "evaluated."

The FlightAware aviation tracking website shows the plane had departed Victoria Regional Airport at 9:52 a.m. CST and crashed at 2:58 p.m.

It identified Marc Inc. as the owner of the aircraft.

The Mississipi-based company told KPRC2 in a telephone interview that the aircraft had been conducting a land survey in the Victoria area when the crash occurred.

The crash has affected traffic in the region, with access to the nearby Victoria East High School restricted, authorities said.

"Victoria East campus will only be accessible from Mockingbird Lane through John Stockbauer," Victoria Police said in a statement on Facebook on Wednesday night.
