Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Occupants of a vehicle who confronted a Secret Service agent near the home of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen fled the scene after an agent fired shots early Tuesday.

The Secret Service reported that an agent working near Yellen's home observed a sedan with "multiple occupants" who were attempting to open the doors of other cars along the street at about 1:30 a.m. EDT.

"As the sedan approached the agent, a confrontation occurred between the agent and the car's occupants," the Secret Service said. The Secret Service said there was no indication that the agent struck anyone with the gunfire.

The occupants fled their vehicle, and the incident is now being investigated by Metropolitan Police.

"There was no threat to any protectees during this incident and no protectees were harmed," Secret Service said.

Authorities said it was not clear if Yellen, who has served as Treasury secretary over the entire course of the Biden administration, was home at the time of the incident.

The case also will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney's office, officials said. Car thefts and carjackings have been down over the past year by 15% but are still a problem.
