GM to offer $225 adapter allowing its EVs to charge at Tesla Superchargers

Sept. 18 (UPI) -- General Motors said Wednesday it will offer adapters to allow EV drivers to use Tesla's Superchargers.

GM will offer the NACS adapters for $225 through its vehicle brand mobile apps, which can also be used to locate charging stations and pay for charging sessions. They will initially be made available in the United States Wednesday, followed by Canada later this year.

It said the adapters will allow GM EV drivers to make use of more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers.

"GM's ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public charging infrastructure is an integral part of our commitment to an all-electric future," said GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer in a statement. "Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless."

GM said it expects the number of charging stations available to its customers to continue to grow as the company accelerates EV infrastructure deployment, ultimately reaching 231,800 public Level 2 and DC fast chargers.

NACS stands for North American Charging Standard. It was developed by Tesla. The adaptors will be provided by multiple suppliers, according to GM.

GM provides information on the national charging infrastructure on its public charging website.

GM announced plans to partner with Tesla on EV charging in June. Ford also has an agreement with Tesla to use their standard charger.
