Sept. 13 (UPI) -- New York State Sen. Jessica Ramos on Friday announced her bid to challenge New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the upcoming elections next year.

Ramos, a former communications aide to former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, is considered a longshot for the post in the race that includes two other challengers. A Democratic state legislator since 2018, she has been known for feuding with influential party progressives like Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.

Other announced contenders include Comptroller Brad Lander, Scott Stringer, who previously held the position, and State Sen. Zellnor Myrie. Adams' term has been bogged down in scandals involving his staff.

"The city overwhelmingly is in desperate need to feel faith in their institutions again," Ramos said, according to Politico. "All of the scandals aside, the basic functions of government need to be executed."

The daughter of Colombian immigrants, her Senate district includes Corona, East Elmhurst, Flushing, and Jackson Heights. Ramos said she wants to concentrate on affordable housing and supporting the working class.

"I raised the minimum wage and tied it to inflation," Ramos said in her campaign announcement. "It's going to go up every year because of my bill. I've passed a lot of bills in order to address our childcare crisis making sure that there [is] increased access and affordability. I think that's a strong record together with my love for people and love for my city should be palatable for voters."
