Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Powell, 69, is experiencing mild symptoms, the central bank's statement said.

"Chair Powell is up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. Following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, he is working remotely while isolating at home," the press release stated.

Powell became Fed Chair in 2018 and was reappointed and sworn in for a second four-year term May 23, 2022, according to the Federal Reserve.

He served as an Assistant Secretary and as Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury under President George H.W. Bush.

Prior to his appointment to the Fed, Powell was a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C., and a partner at the Carlyle Group.
