July 21 (UPI) -- Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to North Carolina on Thursday to announce that 1 million new households have signed up to save on home broadband through the Affordable Connectivity Program.

The White House said in a statement that the ACP provides $65 billion through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expand high-speed Internet access.

The program provides eligible households up to $30 per month off Internet bills, $75 per month on tribal lands. It also gives a one-time $100 discount off a connected device.

Harris called on governors to join the Biden administration's "all of government" enrollment drive to enroll households in the program.

The White House statement said North Carolina committed to emailing 5 million households to make people aware of the program benefits.

The Social Security Administration, Department of Education, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Commerce and Treasury Department are all doing outreach to connect households to the program.

In Michigan, 1.3 million texts resulted in 25,000 new ACP enrollees. Massachusetts, New York City and Mesa, Ariz., also were cited by the White House Thursday for their participation in the broadband Internet access project.

The ACP is part of the Biden administration Internet for All initiative.

According to the White House, experts estimate nearly 40% of U.S. households qualify for the ACP. Households with income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level qualify.

Recipients of SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, also qualify.
