May 20 (UPI) -- New York City Mayor Eric Adams was swiftly escorted away from an informal press conference Friday and a member of his security team was injured when a metal can was thrown in his direction.

Adams was speaking with reporters outside of New York City Housing Authority residential building in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn when a Nutrament protein drink can was thrown from the building in his direction, the New York Daily News reported.

The can hit Mike Hosek, a member of Adams' security team, in the arm and he suffered a "minor injury," an NYPD official told the Daily News.

The can landed 10 feet away from the mayor, the New York Post reported, as his security detail took him across the street to a parked SUV.

"I was standing two feet from the mayor, I just reacted. Thank God nothing happened to him. It could have been a disaster," Hosek told the New York Post.

"We called right away for air mail and frisked the mayor across the street to safety."

Fabien Levy, the mayor's press secretary, told the New York Post that officials "have no reason to believe this item was aimed at the mayor."

"The mayor continued his press gaggle, took pictures with individuals present, talked with others, and then walked across the street to speak with more New Yorkers," Levy said. "He departed as scheduled and without incident."

NYPD Housing Chief Jeffrey Maddrey told the Daily News that two police officers were sent into the building to investigate after the can was thrown.

"They know that I'm into health, so they threw down a protein drink," Adams said at another event later in the day. Adams adheres to a mostly vegan diet.

"I didn't get a chance to thank them, I had to get up to the Bronx, but I appreciate the commitment to my nutritional values."
