TikTok rolls out new tools to credit creators

May 19 (UPI) -- TikTok is rolling out new tools for users to tag and credit the content originators who inspired them.

"Today, we're introducing new tools to better enable creator credit and equitable attribution for our creator community and content originators," Kudzi Chikumbu, the video-sharing platform's U.S. director of creator community, announced in a post Wednesday.

"With the launch of these crediting tools, creators will have the ability to directly tag, mention and credit a video in their description, showcasing the diverse voices on the platform and the strength of our community," Chikumbu added.

Chikumbu said the new tools are designed to allow creators to "directly cite their inspiration" and "support a culture of credit."

"We're also adding more user prompts to credit throughout the posting process, along with an educational pop-up that encourages and explains the importance of crediting," Chikumbu said. "These new features will be rolling out to more people over the next few weeks."

The change came in part due to complaints from users that the platform thrives off creators of viral videos who do not give people proper credit or attribution.

Over the summer, Black TikTok artists went on strike, noting dances like the Renegade and Savage went viral on the site after users copied Black dance creators, but the original Black creators weren't given due credit.
