April 11 (UPI) -- A 3-year-old girl has died after falling into a waterfall in North Carolina on Sunday, police have confirmed.

Nevaeh Jade Newswanger was with her family when she was swept into the water at Whitewater Falls, in Jackson County, N.C.

The child's body was recovered by rescue crews early Monday morning.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Newswanger's family had been living in Oconee County, S.C., while working in the area.

Oconee County is around 25 miles south of Whitewater Falls, which is located near the border of North Carolina and South Carolina.

"First and foremost our prayers are with the Newswanger family as they grieve the loss of this precious young child," said Jackson County Sheriff Chip Hall.

"With the onset of spring weather, we need to be reminded of the dangers associated with many scenic areas of the region such as waterfalls. While beautiful to view from a safe distance, venturing out closer to the falls for any reason brings tremendous danger. Always remain at a distance, follow safety precautions and warnings that are in place, and view waterfalls from designated viewing areas."
