Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The leader of the New York City Police Department's second-largest union has resigned after federal agents raided his home and the union's headquarters -- as part of an unspecified investigation.
NYPD Sgt. Ed Mullins, who has been a vocal critic of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, resigned as president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association after the raids late Tuesday.
The union's board acknowledged that Mullins, who's also been a supporter of former President Donald Trump, appears to be part of an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department.
Mullins led the powerful union, which represents 13,000 active and retired NYPD sergeants, since 2002.
"The nature and scope of this criminal investigation has yet to be determined, however, it is clear that President Mullins is apparently the target of the federal investigation," the SBA board said, according to the New York Daily News. "We have no reason to believe that any other member of the SBA is involved or targeted in this matter."
Mullins' long-running feud with de Blasio turned personal when he posted online an arrest report of the mayor's daughter Chiara after she was arrested during an anti-police brutality protest last year after the death of George Floyd.
Mullins was later charged with violating NYPD rules over the post and was involved in a departmental trial.
"Ed Mullins dishonored his uniform, his city and his union more times than I can count," de Blasio said tweeted Tuesday. "It was just a matter of time before his endless hatred would catch up with him. That day has come."
FBI agents raided Mullins' home on Long Island and a bureau spokesperson said the raid was part of an ongoing investigation.
Rep. Ritchie Torres, the congressman for New York's 15th District and often one of Mullins' targets, applauded the federal action against the former union leader.
"Ed Mullins, who famously called me a 'first-class whore' for daring to ask questions about the [SBA] just got a first-class raid from the FBI," Torres tweeted.
"First-class raid followed by a first-class resignation. Former Sergeant Ed Mullins: Don't let the door hit you on the way out."
