Student shoots another student at Memphis school, suspect in custody

Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A student shot another student at Cummings K-8 Optional School in South Memphis on Thursday, leaving a 13-year-old boy hospitalized.

Memphis Assistant Chief of Police Don Crowe told reporters the 13-year-old boy was transported to LeBonheur Children's Hospital and was listed in "critical, but stable condition."

"Certainly, at this point we need to be praying for that child and the child's family so that he can make a full recovery," Crowe said.

During the investigation, video evidence indicated that the shooter was another student at the school who fled the school in a vehicle after the shooting, but since then the suspect has turned himself in, according to Crowe.

Crowe said it was too early to determine motive, but detectives were conducting a "very thorough investigation."

"All the evidence that we've gathered at this point indicates one suspect," Crowe added in response to a reporter's question at the news conference.

Shelby County Schools district spokesperson Jerica Phillips said students were transported to a safe location during a precautionary school lockdown, and since the suspect has been taken into custody, they notified their parents and began dismissal.

"Our thoughts and prayers are are with the family of the student," Philips said.

Philips also noted that the district conducted active shooter training on Sept. 2 to help prepare and implement safety protocols.
