Rep. Bob Latta second Ohio congressman with breakthrough COVID-19 case

Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday and announced that he will be quarantining at home. His is the 12th known breakthrough case of a member of Congress.

Latta said he got tested after a close contact tested positive.

Fellow Ohio congressman Tim Ryan also announced that he tested positive for COVID-19 on the same day, though it remains unclear whether Latta contracted the virus from him.

"Recently, I was notified that someone I was around who was vaccinated tested positive for the coronavirus. Even though I am fully vaccinated, to be cautious, I got tested because of the exposure," he said Monday. "Today, I got the results, and I did test positive for COVID-19."

An advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration voted last week to recommend booster shots for people over age 65. Recent data shows that booster shots increase the efficacy of vaccines and increase antibodies by up to twelve-fold.
