Capitol Police recommends disciplinary actions against officers for Jan. 6 siege

Sept. 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. Capitol Police has recommended disciplinary action for officers involved in six cases stemming from the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol building.

In a statement released Saturday, the department said violations include three for unbecoming conduct, one for failure to comply with directives, one for improper remarks and one for improper dissemination of information.

It did not specify the number of officers involved in the violations, their names or disciplinary actions recommended, stating that is "not public information."

The USCP's Office of Professional Responsibility had launched investigations in to 38 complaints concerning officers protecting the Capitol on Jan. 6 from thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump who stormed the building in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden from being certified as the 46th president of the United States.

At least five people died in connection to the siege and some 140 Capitol Police officers were injured. Hundreds of people have been charged for their involvement.

The department said it was unable to identify 26 officers involved in complaints while finding no wrongdoing having been committed in 20 investigations.

Another case concerning an officer accused of unsatisfactory performance and unbecoming conduct is still ongoing, it said.

"The six sustained cases should not diminish the heroic efforts of the United States Capitol Police officers," it said. "On Jan. 6, the bravery and courage exhibited by the vast majority of our employees was inspiring."

The USCP said it has provided the Department of Justice with information on the cases as part of its own prosecution of those who on Jan. 6 stormed the Capitol.

The announcement came after the USCP in February suspended six officers for their actions on Jan. 6.
