Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A man found guilty in a false imprisonment case in North Carolina was fatally shot after rushing the judge following the verdict, police said.
Christopher Thomas Vaughan, 35, died from gunshot wound to the head after rushing a Person County judge Thursday. Officials said Vaughan became enraged after hearing his guilty verdict and tried to grab a deputy's gun.
Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones said the incident occurred around noon at the Roxboro courthouse, adding that the courthouse remained closed for the remainder of the day.
A Roxboro police officer shot Vaughan, according to the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation. The officer's name has not been released.
Vaughan died Thursday night, according to Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, whose office was also investigating the incident.
Louisburg attorney Boyd Sturges said Vaughan was charged with false imprisonment after allegedly trying to coerce a woman at a Walmart.
Sturges added that Vaughan threw a chair and ran for the judge's bench Thursday.
A Person County sheriff's deputy had a head gash from the incident and a Roxboro police officer a broken hand, and they were both treated at the hospital and released, the SBI said.
