Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Job openings in the United States by the end of July had increased to nearly 11 million -- and outnumbered the number of jobless Americans by about 2 million, the Labor Department said Wednesday.
The figures were detailed in the department's monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover report.
According to the data, the number of openings increased from June by almost 7%. In June, the total number of openings was about 10.2 million.
"Job openings increased in several industries, with the largest increases in healthcare and social assistance (+294,000); finance and insurance (+116,000); and accommodation and food services (+115,000)," the report states.
'The number of job openings increased in the Northeast, South, and West regions."
The number of unemployed Americans in the same month was about 8.7 million.
Some experts believe the number of unemployed could decrease in September and October now that enhanced jobless benefits have expired.
