Aug. 26 (UPI) -- New unemployment claims in the United States have risen slightly but were nearly in line with what most analysts expected, the Labor Department said in its weekly report Thursday.

The department said there were 353,000 new jobless claims last week, an increase of 4,000 filings.

Most experts predicted about 350,000 new claims.

Thursday's report marked the first rise in new filings in several weeks.

Despite the increase, the level of new claims is still lower than it's been at any point since March 2020.

The department said in its report that there were 2.86 million continuing claims, which lag initial claims by a week.
