GM will bring 5G connectivity to vehicles by 2024

Aug. 19 (UPI) -- General Motors will bring 5G cellular connectivity to vehicles in 2024 and enhance GM's fifth-generation network of 4G LTE-equipped vehicles made as early as 2019.

The higher speed network is expected to enable greater connectivity for in-vehicle systems including navigation and over-the-air software updates.

Once the new infrastructure is available, Chevrolet, Buick GMC and Cadillac owners with cars made in 2019 or after will migrate to the new network, GM announced Thursday. It began installing 4G LTE connectivity in its vehicles in 2014.

"The 4G LTE and 5G network improvements will be foundational for the future of GM's growing over-the-air update strategy, an element of the automaker's overall innovation and growth plan," the company said in a press release.

"GM's fifth-generation network will also provide a strong foundation as the company advances its technology, such as Super Cruise and its Vehicle Intelligence Platform."

The rollout is in collaboration with cellular service provider AT&T. GM expects millions of cars to have 5G within the next decade.
