Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Fred weakened to a tropical depression over southeastern Alabama on Tuesday morning, while bringing heavy rain and a threat of flooding inland across eastern portions of the state and into western Georgia.
In its 4 a.m. CDT update, the National Hurricane Center said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and was located 15 miles south-southwest of Columbus, Ga. It was moving north-northeast at 14 mph.
