July 1 (UPI) -- TikTok said Thursday it will soon provide the option to create longer videos on its app.

The option will expand maximum video length on the short-form video sharing app from 1 minute to 3 minutes, a TikTok statement said. Previously, creators were forced to weave multi-part stories together if their content was longer than a minute.

TikTok social media consultant Matt Navarra tweeted in December that some creators had "early access" to test out the longer video format. TikTok's users may have already come across some longer videos from top TikTok creators, but they were limited to select users, The Verge reported. Now, the longer videos will roll out to everyone on the app "over the coming weeks."

"There's so much that can happen in a TikTok minute, from crowdsourced musicals and sea shanty singalongs to feta pasta recipes, roller skating revivals, and more," TikTok Product Manager Drew Kirchhoff said in the statement. "Now, we're introducing the option for our global community to create longer videos -- paving the way for even richer storytelling and entertainment on TikTok."

Creators asked for "a little more time to bring their cooking demos, elaborate beauty tutorials, educational lesson plans, and comedic sketches to life with TikTok's creative tools," he added.
