Tropical Storm Danny weakens to a depression after making landfall

June 28 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Danny weakened to a depression late Monday after making landfall hours earlier.

Danny became the fourth named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season earlier in the day.

In a 11 p.m. update, the National Hurricane Center downgraded Danny from a tropical storm to a depression but warned heavy rains will continue over portions of Georgia and South Carolina.

The forecaster located the storm in South Carolina about 50 miles west-northwest of Beaufort and about 95 miles west of Charleston.

It was moving west-northwest at 15 mph with sustained winds of 40 mph -- a 5 mph drop from three hours earlier when it made landfall.

Danny was forecast to move further inland across east-central and northern Georgia into Tuesday morning.

A tropical storm warning for Edisto Beach to the South Santee River in South Carolina has since been discontinued.

The storm could produce 1-3 inches of rainfall along the coasts of southern South Carolina and Georgia, with 1-2 inches possible further inland in upstate South Carolina, the Piedmont of Georgia and northeastern Alabama.

"This region has been dry, limiting potential widespread flooding impacts, however, local flooding impacts, especially in urban areas along the southern South Carolina and Georgia coasts, cannot be ruled out at this time," the NHC said earlier.
