June 22 (UPI) -- McDonald's announced Tuesday that it will unveil the first U.S. loyalty program in its history this summer.

The global fast food chain will launch MyMcDonald's Rewards on July 8. The program will give customers points for every dollar spent.

When enough points are earned, they will be good for various items on the menu.

In all, McDonald's will offer more than a dozen reward options, divided into four tiers.

"For over 65 years, McDonald's fans' longtime loyalty has been unmatched... and we think it's time they were rewarded," the company said in a statement.

"We want everyone to feel connected to our brand, which is why we are working to enhance your experience."

McDonald's began testing the program last fall in individual markets. Some of them will offer the program before the July launch, the company said.
