Niece of Asian woman stabbed multiple times says 'nobody' helped after incident

June 18 (UPI) -- A 94-year-old Asian woman said her condition is improving after she was stabbed multiple times in San Francisco Wednesday and a suspect was arrested.

The woman's family is expressing concerns about the indifference the victim encountered after the attack.

Anh "Peng" Taylor is recovering at San Francisco General Hospital after the man, 35-year-old Daniel Cauich, was arrested not long after the incident, San Francisco's ABC7 News reported Friday.

Taylor said she is feeling better and that there are a "lot of crazy people around" in her hometown, according to the report.

Viva Taylor, the victim's niece told the network that the stabbing is a shock to the family.

"She's telling me often how San Francisco has changed in the time she's been here," Viva Taylor said. "This never should have happened, she's lived in San Francisco since the '70s. Up until now, she's been fully mobile and independent."

Anh "Peng" Taylor's niece also said her aunt, who is "Chinese born in Vietnam," has received a flood of support but that she remains upset that nobody stopped to help.

"At first nobody was paying attention to her and I think we've gotten in this city a little dehumanized, less connected, and we're all suspicious of each other. We need to stop and listen," Viva Taylor said.

The attack occurred at about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in the Lower Nob Hill neighborhood, KTVU FOX 2 reported.

Security camera footage shows Taylor walking down a sidewalk when a figure appears and walks up to the victim then stabs her in the front. Taylor also was stabbed in the wrist.

Cauich has been arrested multiple times on burglary charges and once in 2016 on a homicide charge, according to NBC Bay Area.

Murder charges against Cauich were dropped in 2019 for "lack of evidence," according to reports.

The stabbing took place this week as hate crimes against Asian Americans remain a hot-button issue amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In the first quarter of 2021 anti-Asian hate crimes were up 169%, according to the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, NBC News reported.
