Lina Kahn confirmed to join FTC

June 15 (UPI) -- The Senate confirmed Lina Khan, who has complained that current antitrust laws are not adequate to deal with tech giants like Amazon, to the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday.

Khan's confirmation vote was a break from many of the razor-thin, near party-line votes on most of President Joe Biden's nominations, with Khan winning by a 69-28 margin.

"I'm so grateful to the Senate for my confirmation," Khan said on Twitter. "Congress created the FTC to safeguard fair competition and protect consumers, workers and honest businesses from unfair and deceptive practices. I look forward to upholding this mission with vigor and serving the American public."

Khan promised during her confirmation hearing that she would take a tough line on regulating tech titans. She said new evidence has emerged that there were "missed opportunities" for enforcement actions against tech companies under the Obama administration.

The confirmation gives the Democrats a 3-2 majority at the FTC, joining acting chairwoman Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Rohit Chopra.

A longtime associate professor at Columbia University Law School, she served as a legal adviser to Chopra at the Federal Trade Commission and was legal director at the Open Markets Institute.
