June 7 (UPI) -- Former Michigan State University basketball player Keith Appling was charged with murder on Monday in the fatal shooting of a relative last month.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced her office was pursuing one count of first-degree murder, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm against Appling, 29, in the shooting of 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds on May 22.
Appling was arrested on May 24 after police said Appling got into a verbal altercation with Edwards that then turned physical before he fired multiple gunshots and fled the scene in a Buick Regal.
Prosecutors said that Edmonds' wife is the first cousin of Appling's mother
Appling's girlfriend, 28-year-old Natalie Brooks, was also charged with one count of accessory after the fact and of lying to a peace officer.
Bannister allegedly drove Appling away from the scene and failed to tell the truth to officers investigating the scene.
Appling has separately been charged with assault with intent to do bodily harm less than murder and felony firearm for an incident in Jackson County on May 2.
In 2017, he pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and resisting and obstructing a Detroit police officer during a 2016 traffic stop and was serving a term of five years' probation.
He also pleaded guilty to a drug-related case last fall and was given 18 months of probation.
