Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Retailer Target announced Tuesday it will hire 133,000 temporary workers nationwide for the holiday season and invest $2 million in a holiday team appreciation program.

The big-box retailer said 125,000 of the new hires will work in stores and the other 8,000 in its distribution and fulfillment centers, to handle online orders.

"It's critical we build the right team across our stores and supply chain to deliver an exceptional holiday experience for our guests during the busiest time of the year," Target human resources chief Melissa Kremer said in a statement.

"We continue to invest in our team because they make it easier and more joyful to shop at Target, especially during the holidays."

Target said the workers will earn $13 per hour and holiday pay for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Other U.S. companies will also hire more workers for the holiday season. Shipping giant UPS said Monday it will add about 100,000 to work from November to January and offer tuition reimbursement at some locations.

Retailer Amazon has already started hiring seasonal workers and Kohl's is doubling the number it hired for the holidays last year.
