July 27 (UPI) -- New York City police on Saturday charged a man with homicide after he left his twin son and daughter in a hot car while at work.
Officials said the 1-year-olds were discovered dead in a car in the Bronx on Friday afternoon.
They are investigating whether the children died from heat exposure.
Investigators said the father, 39-year-old Juan Rodriguez, said he accidentally left the twins in their rear-facing car seats on his way to work at a nearby Veteran's Administration Medical Center on Friday around 8 a.m.
Police took the Rockland County man into custody Friday and charged him early Saturday with two counts of criminally negligent homicide and two counts of manslaughter, authorities said.
Rodriguez told police that he went back to his car at around 4 p.m. and after driving two blocks away noticed the children were "foaming at the mouth," at which point, he called 911, police said.
"The vehicle had tinted windows, so it was almost impossible for anybody to notice that the children were there," New York City Council member Fernando Cabrera said.
