July 27 (UPI) -- Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz has been released from Massachusetts General Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound in June.

ABC News and ESPN confirmed the three-time World Series champion is out of the hospital. Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic on June 9 by a 9 mm bullet that passed through his intestines and internal organs.

"There will be an update on his condition early next week," a Red Sox spokesperson told WFXT-TV in Boston.

Ortiz had emergency surgery in his home country before he was airlifted to Boston a day later. He was moved out of intensive care on June 22 after a second surgery.

Ortiz had a third surgery earlier this month.

Eleven suspects have been arrested and charged in the shooting.

Ortiz retired after the 2016 season. He hit .286 with 541 home runs and 1,768 RBIs in 20 seasons with the Minnesota Twins (1997 to 2002) and Red Sox (2003 to 2016).
