Police looking into woman's '06 death after husband charged with killing 2nd wife

March 18 (UPI) -- Authorities in North Carolina are taking another look at a woman's death in 2006 after her husband was charged and arrested for the death of his second wife.

Rexford Lynn Keel, Jr., 57, was arrested Sunday during a traffic stop near Tucson, Ariz., the Nash County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Officials said he was found in possession of a large sum of money and several Wells Fargo receipts, and said nothing during his arrest. He was set to be transferred to North Carolina Monday.

Stone said Keel was arrested after officials received a tip that he was traveling west. He was taken to Pima County Jail in Tucson and charged with first-degree murder.

Keel's capture ended a multi-state manhunt that began last week in connection to the death of his wife, 38-year-old Diana Alejandra Keel. Her body was found by a state transportation worker about 30 miles away from her North Carolina home, four days after her family reported her missing March 9.

Keel was questioned last week in the case, but was released. Police sought to question him again when an autopsy found she was killed, but authorities said he'd vanished.

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone told reporters Sunday the woman died of multiple stab wounds, WRAL-TV reported.

"My heart goes out to Diana Keel's family," Stone said of her 18-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. "What a sad and traumatic experience this is."

Keel's arrest has prompted authorities to take another look at the 2006 death of Keel's first wife, Bess, which was ruled "accidental" by a medical examiner.

Bess Keel died after falling and hitting her head on the corner of concrete steps in front of her house.

Officials said detectives will work with the FBI and other local officials in reviewing the cases.
