Mislabeling prompts recall of 100,000 pounds of frozen chicken

Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Nearly 100,000 pounds of chicken was recalled because of mislabeling and the undeclared presence of eggs, an allergen, the USDA announced.

VICS Acquisition, a Harlingen, Texas, food processor, is recalling 99,975 pounds of frozen chicken sold under the happi foodi and Southeast Grocers brands. The products contain eggs, an allergen known to cause immune problems in some consumers. The presence of eggs is not mentioned on the label.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a recall of 1.5-lb. packages containing one frozen steam bag meal of "happi foodi Bloody Mary Inspired Chicken" with lot codes 14528 and 15092 and "use by" dates of March 2, 2020 and April 15, 2020; 1.5-lb. packages containing one frozen steam bag meal of "SE Grocers Marsala Chicken" with lot codes 14177 and 14532 and "use by" dates of Feb. 8, 2020 and March 3, 2020, and 1.5-lb. packages containing one frozen steam bag meal of "SE Grocers Mediterranean Style Herb Chicken" with lot codes 14145 and 14531 and "use by" dates of Feb. 7, 2020 and March 4, 2020.

The products were made between Aug. 7 and Oct. 15, 2018. The happi foodi products were shipped to retail stores across the country, while the Southeast Grocers products were sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reaction to consumption of the chicken. Consumers with questions can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854.
