By Sommer Brokaw

Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Since one student died from the adenovirus last month, the number of reported cases at the University of Maryland-College Park campus has risen to 40.

With more than 50 strains of adenoviruses, symptoms can range from mild symptoms like the common cold or more serious symptoms such as pneumonia or intestinal infection, especially among those with weakened immune systems.

The university said one student has been hospitalized and at least 10 have one of the most serious strains.

Olivia Paregol, 18, died from complications of the adenovirus on Nov. 18.

The adenovirus also claimed the lives of 11 children at a New Jersey nursing facility, health officials confirmed last month.

The university began consulting with Maryland Department of Health and Prince George's County Health Department to monitor cases and discuss preventative measures in mid-November. The university plans on disinfecting with deep cleaning over winter break to combat the spread of the virus.
