Google announces plans for new $1 billion campus in NYC

Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Google announced Monday it will spend more than $1 billion on a new campus in New York City, near where Amazon will set up a new headquarters.

Ruth Porat, senior vice president for Google and parent company Alphabet, wrote in a blog post Monday the company will move into two Hudson Street locations by 2020 and another on Washington Street in 2022.

Porat said its new Google Hudson Square complex will be the primary location for its Global Business Operations.

"New York City continues to be a great source of diverse, world-class talent -- that's what brought Google to the city in 2000 and that's what keeps us here," Porat wrote.

"With these most recent investments in Google Chelsea and Google Hudson Square, we will have the capacity to more than double the number of Googlers in New York over the next 10 years," Porat added. "Our investment in New York is a huge part of our commitment to grow and invest in U.S. facilities, offices and jobs."

Google's announcement comes a month after retail giant Amazon announced plans for a new headquarters in Long Island City and suburban Washington, D.C. Amazon promised to invest $5 billion in the project and create more than 50,000 new jobs split between the two campuses.

Another tech giant, Apple, announced an expansion of its own last week, for a new campus in Austin, Texas, and new operations in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, Calif. It said it will also expand its operations in New York, Pittsburgh and Boulder, Colo.
