Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A bus carrying a youth football team crashed on a central Arkansas freeway Monday, killing one and injuring 45, police said.
Arkansas State Police said the crash happened about 2:40 a.m. west of Benton, Ark. Authorities said the chartered bus was headed to Memphis from Dallas when left the roadway and overturned. Several of the students were hospitalized.
The team had played a football tournament in Dallas and was returning home when the bus crashed. The Little League football team had players ranging from ages 9 to 12, KARK-TV reported.
The team came from the Orange Mound community, a historic neighborhood that was the first African-American residential area in the city. The players were part of the Orange Mound Youth Association football program.
Police said they don't know yet what caused the crash, but would speak with the driver.
The Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock tweeted Monday it treated more than 20 patients and established a family center for parents and relatives.
