Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A deputy U.S. marshal was shot dead Thursday while serving a felony warrant in southern Arizona, federal authorities said.

The U.S. Marshals Service issued an arrest warrant for Ryan Schlesinger on charges he stalked a law enforcement officer. The deputy was shot at the suspect's home in Tucson, officials said.

The shooting led to an hour-long standoff at the home before officers finally arrested Schlesinger, 26, Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus said.

"This is a tragic night for law enforcement in Tucson and across the state of Arizona," Magnus said in a report by the Arizona Daily Star. "It's really devastating when you see the impact that this has on the officer's family. And on the broader law enforcement family, it's even tougher."

The federal agent's death is the first of U.S. marshal in the line of duty in Tucson in 66 years. The name of the marshal was not immediately released.

After the marshal was shot, officers surrounded the house and several neighboring homes were evacuated. Authorities returned fire on the suspect but he was not hurt, officials said.

"The suspect did surrender and was taken into custody without incident," Magnus said.

Schlesinger will appear in court Dec. 5 on charges of harassment by communication. He will now also be charged with the marshal's death.

"My deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family and all of Arizona law enforcement," Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said in a tweet late Thursday.
