Nov. 26 (UPI) -- First lady Melania Trump on Monday unveiled the White House's Christmas decorations theme for 2018 -- American Treasures.

Dozens of trees will adorn the building this holiday season, many paying tribute to American historical figures and heroes, including presidents past, founding fathers and those who have fallen in military service.

"This is a joyous time of year when we decorate the White House for the Christmas season," Melania Trump said of the decor. "Our theme honors the heart and spirit of the American people."

Gold Star families decorated the Gold Star Family tree in honor of military members "who have sacrificed greatly to protect our freedoms." The White House is encouraging visitors to write messages to loved ones on duty on digital tablets set up in the East Wing.

Meanwhile, some 40, red-colored topiary trees line the East colonnade while four trees in the library feature ornaments representing the 50 states and former President Harry Truman.

The Vermeil room has two blue and gold trees, the Green Room has a tree showcasing the nation's native crops, and the Grand Foyer and Cross Hall include 29 trees with more than 14,000 red ornaments.

The official White House Christmas tree is in the Blue Room and measures more than 18 feet tall with ornaments representing each of the states and territories.

Larry Smith delivered the official tree -- a mountain top fraser fir from Newland, N.C. -- to the White House last week.

The decorations go beyond just Christmas trees, with three tables replicating state dinners under the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt and Donald Trump in the China Room. Four custom mantlepieces showcasing the skylines of New York City, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco are in the East Room.

"Thank you to the many volunteers and staff who worked hard to decorate the halls of the People's House in Christmas cheer. On behalf of my family, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year," Melania Trump said.
