Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Police say the man who shot a doctor, a pharmacy assistant and a police officer at a Chicago hospital was the ex-fiance of one of the victims.
The shooter at the city's Mercy Hospital Monday was named as 32-year-old Juan Lopez. Police say he went to the hospital, shot former fiancee Dr. Tamara O'Neal, pharmaceutical assistant Dayna Less and Chicago Police officer Samuel Jiminez.
Lopez and O'Neal, 38, did have plans to marry last month but she called off the engagement in September, family members told WLS-TV. It was not clear Monday why the marriage was canceled.
O'Neal was confronted by Lopez and shot on her way into the hospital, police said. Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said a friend tried to intervene.
After killing O'Neal, investigators said Lopez shot at responding Chicago police officers before entering the hospital, where he was shot dead by police.
Purdue University said Tuesday O'Neal received her bachelor's degree in psychology there in 2002 and Less hers from the school's College of Pharmacy earlier this year.
Less was set to travel to Indiana for Thanksgiving and had been planning to marry there next year, WLS-TV reported.
O'Neal was a critical care specialist at the hospital, having received her medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine and practiced for nearly three years.
"She's one of the sweetest nieces that I have," O'Neal's aunt, Delores Davis, told WBBM-TV. "She was also dedicated to her church."
