Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg leaves hospital

Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was discharged from the hospital Friday, less than two days after she broke three ribs in a fall this week.

Ginsburg, 85, a critical liberal vote on the high court for 25 years, fell in her office at the Washington, D.C., court building Wednesday. She initially went home but later checked into George Washington Hospital after some discomfort.

The fall forced Ginsburg to miss Thursday's investiture ceremony welcoming new justice Brett Kavanaugh to the court. USA Today reported. She did perform some work in her hospital room Thursday night, though, officials said.

Health scares are nothing new to Ginsburg, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. She was treated for colon cancer in 1999, pancreatic cancer in 2009 and underwent a heart procedure in 2014.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Ginsburg planned to work from home Friday.

In April, justice Sonia Sotomayor had shoulder replacement surgery after a fall at her home. She wore a sling for several weeks and practiced physical therapy for several months.

Ginsburg said earlier this year she wants to serve five more years, noting that former justice John Paul Stevens remained on the high court into his 90s.
