Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Pet food company Nutrisca on Wednesday announced a recall of its dry dog food, due to elevated Vitamin D levels.
The voluntary recall affects Nutrisca Chicken and Chickpea Dry Dog Food, sold in retail stores in four, 15 and 28-pound bags.
The St. Louis-based company said an error in formulation of the product was discovered after complaints from three people, whose pets showed signs of Vitamin D toxicity.
"Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss," the Food and Drug administration advised in a recall notice. "Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction."
The FDA advised owners to dispose of or return the food.
