Last of Pittsburgh shooting victims laid to rest

Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh on Friday laid to rest the last of the 11 people killed in a synagogue shooting, 97-year-old Rose Mallinger.

Hundreds attended the funeral at Rodef Shalom Temple, including Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

"She was very vibrant and a very kind-hearted lady," Michele Organist, a family friend, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "She would still walk and do things. She would go out and take on the world."

Mallinger had three children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her daughter, 61-year-old Andrea Wedner, was one of six people injured in the shooting Saturday at Tree of Life Synagogue in the city's Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

Mallinger attended Tree of Life for 60 years before her death.

Among the six injuries were four police officers; three people remained hospitalized Friday, USA Today reported.

Authorities identified the other victims as Joyce Fienberg, 75; Irving Younger, 69; Melvin Wax, 87; Robert Gottfried, 65; Bernice Simon, 84; Sylvan Simon, 86; Daniel Stein, 71; Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz, 66; and brothers Cecil Rosenthal, 59, and David Rosenthal, 54.

On Thursday, the accused shooter, Robert Bowers, pleaded not guilty to 44 charges.
