Emergency workers transported the injured student to a hospital, where he died.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said the two students were in a fight in a hallway before one pulled out a gun and fired.

Matthews is about 10 miles southeast of downtown Charlotte and 15 miles from the South Carolina border.

The Matthews Police Department said it believes the shooting to be an isolated incident.

The school lifted the lockdown around 9:15 a.m. Students were seen streaming out of the school crying and hugging their parents. Some parents picked up their children from school, while others returned to class.
