June 27 (UPI) -- An East Pittsburgh police officer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager this month was charged with criminal homicide Wednesday.
Officer Michael Rosfeld, 30, turned himself in early Wednesday and is being held on a $250,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 6.
Rosfeld, hired by East Pittsburgh Police in mid-May, was officially sworn into the job 90 minutes before the shooting.
Rosfeld shot and killed Antwon Rose II, 17, who was in a car the officer stopped minutes after a drive-by shooting in North Braddock, Pa.
As Rose and a second person, Zaijuan Hester, ran from the car, Rosfeld fired his weapon. Police said Rose was unarmed. Two guns were found in the vehicle.
Hester was later arrested and charged with attempted homicide and other charges stemming from the North Braddock shooting.
The shooting sparked days of protests that blocked roadways as people marched to the Allegheny County Courthouse demanding charges be filed against Rosfeld.
