June 25 (UPI) -- A Southern California firefighter died Monday after he and another were shot after responding to an explosion at a retirement community, authorities said.

Long Beach, Calif., Fire Department Capt. David Rosa, a 17-year veteran, and another firefighter were wounded early Monday after answering the blast at the Covenant Manor senior facility.

Officials said they found blown-out windows, an activated sprinkler and a small fire.

After putting out the fire, they were shot while investigating a possible gas leak.

The other, unidentified firefighter received non life threatening injuries. Police said another person was also shot, possibly a paramedic.

Police and SWAT officers surrounded the building and closed off streets and residents of nearby apartment buildings were evacuated. Police later said it was not an active shooter scenario.

The suspected gunman was arrested. A witness said he recognized the suspect as a regular bicyclist in the area, but did not know his name.
