June 25 (UPI) -- Authorities are investigating the crash of a small plane near a Detroit airport that killed two people and critically hurt a third.
The plane was arriving from Arkansas late Sunday at Coleman A. Young International Airport when it crashed and landed upside down on a city street. It appeared to have struck a tree before hitting the pavement, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Police said a 54-year-old man and 48-year-old woman died. A 17-year-old boy was rescued by a woman who broke a window with an ax to reach him. The boy was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.
"The only thing I know, the plane crashed, and we started running toward it. It was a small flame and the flame got out of control and started burning. And the young gentleman in the plane was hollering and screaming and that's when I went to work with that, with that ax, so he could get out," the witness told WILX-TV.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot reported low fuel and landing gear problems before the crash. It added the plane had circled the airport runway and attempted to land in a vacant grassy lot.
No one on the ground was hurt.
