June 20 (UPI) -- As heavy rainfall continued Wednesday in south Texas, flash floods are submerging vehicles and causing water rescues.

Forecasters said the rain, which is expected to continue through early Thursday, has led to flash flood emergencies being issued in portions of Hidalgo and Cameron counties.

Cars along frontage roads off Interstate 2 were submerged in floodwaters, which also threatened some homes, the National Weather Service said.

The NWS tweeted of threats in Port Aransas and reports of water rescues and flooded city streets. Rescues were also reported in Corpus Christi.

Several more inches of rain fell on some parts of southeast Texas Tuesday, adding to the 10 inches the area received earlier this week. The heaviest rain is expected in Brownsville and the lower Rio Grande Valley through Wednesday night.

Forecasters said Beaumont received more than 11 inches by Wednesday.

Other alerts were issued for potentially life-threatening floods from McAllen to Harlingen.
