June 8 (UPI) -- A woman walking her dogs in a South Florida park may have been ambushed by an alligator and dragged into a pond, police said Friday.
Police and animal officers were searching the Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park for the woman. Det. Vivian Gallinal said a witness saw her walking two pit bulls near the water Friday morning, and later saw the dogs walking alone. One was wounded.
Police said an alligator was spotted in the pond by trappers called in to help, leading officers to believe the woman may have been dragged under.
"Her dogs won't leave the pond," Davie Police Maj. Dale Engle said. "One of her dogs got bit by the gator."
One thing hampering the search is divers can't go into the water until the alligator is captured, Engle said.
"We're still looking for her," Gallinal said. "We haven't had any reports of anybody missing other than this witness, who saw her earlier and then never saw her again."
