June 6 (UPI) -- A White House contractor was arrested at a security checkpoint by Secret Service agents who noticed he faced an arrest warrant on an attempted first-degree murder charge.

Martese Edwards, a 29-year-old contractor for the White House National Security Council, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon.

When Edwards provided his Maryland driver's license as identification, Secret Service found that the Criminal Justice Information System database showed he was wanted for attempted murder in Prince George's County, Maryland.

The Secret Service said Edwards was "promptly" taken into custody.

Prince Geroge's County Police claim Edwards shot his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend in the abdomen, on May 3. A warrant was issued for Edwards' arrest on May 17.

The contractor had access to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, not to the West Wing, where the president's offices are.

Edwards will be extradited to Prince George's County.
