June 6 (UPI) -- A soldier who stole an armored military vehicle was arrested after leading Virginia police on a 60-mile chase Tuesday night, authorities said.

The vehicle, an armored personnel carrier, was taken from Virginia National Guard property in Richmond Tuesday evening, officials said. It was not equipped with weaponry.

Police say the suspect drove the vehicle, which moves on tracks similar to a tank, mainly on highways during the lengthy chase. He ultimately stopped the vehicle after exiting a highway near downtown Richmond.

The man, a member of the Virginia National Guard, was then tased after police said he failed to follow troopers' commands. He was treated for minor injuries at a hospital, in police custody.

Witness Brian Wingert told WTVR-TV he knew something was wrong when he first heard the vehicle rumble by.

"It just seemed like something out of a movie," he said. "I heard a large vehicle, it sounded like a tank, but it was moving pretty fast."

Police say charges are pending and the incident is still under investigation.
