May 21 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump reached an agreement with the Department of Justice on Monday to probe potential misconduct by the FBI during its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The Justice Department agreed to request Inspector General Michael Horowitz to investigate allegations that the FBI inappropriately infiltrated or surveilled Trump's campaign.

"Based on the meeting with the president, the Department of Justice has asked the inspector general to expand its current investigation to include any irregularities with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's or the Department of Justice's tactics concerning the Trump campaign," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.
Sanders added White House Chief of Staff John Kelly will set up a meeting with the FBI, Justice Department and National Intelligence Director Dan Coats to "review highly classified and other information they have requested."
Trump demanded Sunday that the Department of Justice investigate potential campaign surveillance after reports by The New York Times and The Washington Post revealed the FBI sent an informant to talk to Trump campaign advisers George Papadopoulos and Carter Page about suspicious contacts linked to Russia during the campaign.
The media reports didn't indicate someone was planted into the Trump campaign or that the informant acted improperly.
