May 21 (UPI) -- Former President George H. W. Bush returned to his family compound in Maine following a two-week hospital stay, during which he fought off a blood infection.

"My beloved dad is in Maine," son Jeb Bush posted on Twitter.

Neighbors gathered near the Dock's Square in Kennebunkport Sunday to welcome the 41st U.S. president as his motorcade passed through the exclusive community.

"It was something that I wanted to do for a long time," resident Randy Litz said. "Spending 25 years in the military I never had the opportunity to meet or even see the president in person, until we came."

The Bush compound, located on an area of land called Walker's Point, has expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and has been used as a vacation spot for the Bushes for generations.

Bush's return home marked his first visit to the Maine complex since his wife and former first lady Barbara Bush died in April at age 92.

The former president was admitted to the intensive-care unit at Houston's Methodist Hospital just one day after his wife's funeral. He was discharged about two weeks later.
