Melania Trump leaves hospital after kidney treatment

May 19 (UPI) -- First Lady Melania Trump left the hospital Saturday after being treated for a benign kidney condition for five days.

"The First Lady returned home to the White House this morning," said Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director in a CNN report. "She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits. Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out."

Trump, 48, had been hospitalized since Monday at Walter Reed National Medical Center to undergo a embolization procedure, which starves the blood supply to the affected area, Grisham said.

"The procedure was successful and there were no complications," Grisham added.

Grisham told CNN reporters pressing her for more information on why Trump was in the hospital five days for the procedure, she said "every patient is different."

President Donald Trump had visited his wife in the hospital. He has no public events scheduled this weekend, or plans to travel out of town, CBS News reported.

Melania Trump tweeted twice from the hospital, once that she was feeling better and another time to express her grief for the victims in the high school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, on Friday.

"A sincere thank you to Walter Reed Medical Unit . . . to all who have send good wishes & prayers!" she tweeted Wednesday.

"My heart goes out to Santa Fe and all of Texas today," she tweeted Friday.

Melania Trump is the first U.S. first lady to undergo a serious medical procedure while in the White House since Nancy Reagan had a mastectomy in October 1987.

She announced her "Be Best" campaign, focused on three pillars well-being, social media use and opioid abuse among children a week before she went to the hospital.

The campaign's goal is to encourage children to stop bullying on social media and refrain from drugs.
